What will the work look like for me?

The Lean Manufacturing Organization within Daktronics provides leadership and project management skills to successfully implement Lean concepts across the Manufacturing Division, which consists of 7 domestic and 2 international factories, as well as support departments.   

  

As a Daktronics Manufacturing Lean Student, you will get an opportunity to shadow an experienced Daktronics Lean practitioner and apply classroom knowledge in the following areas:  

  • Design, prototype, and develop workstations to optimize work processes and to enhance safety of the operation.  
  • Develop Lean Management System concepts and tools to be used by Lean Leaders throughout the company.  
  • Collect and analyze data to support Lean initiatives.  
  • Assist with the development of plant layout schemes to improve material handling and process flow.  
  • Assist with problem solving to identify and eliminate waste within our manufacturing and business processes.  
  • A significant amount of time using the experiences above to create and deliver training as it relates to Lean concepts.  
  • Work with various functions throughout Manufacturing to assure Lean techniques are being deployed consistently.  
  • Work with various teams to complete identified actions that support continuous improvement activities.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet internal and external customer expectations.  

When will I work?

Applicants should be available to work approximately 15 hours per week (maximum of 20 hours per week) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during the summer.

 

Where is this opportunity located? 

Position located in Brookings, South Dakota. This position is open to candidates eligible to work in the U.S.

 

What are the pay and perks?

The typical hiring range for this position is $20.00 to $22.00 per hour based on the location of Brookings, SD. The actual offer will consider a wide range of factors, including relevant education, experiences, location, and applicable local legislation.

 

Students with GPA of 3.5 and above may be eligible for a $500 Academic Excellence Reward for each spring and fall semester completed while employed.  Additional conditions may apply.

Qualifications

To be considered for Lean Manufacturing Student, we require the following:

 

Academic Requirements:

  • The preferred applicant will be a student registered in at least 12 credits.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program in Operations Management, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
  • The preferred applicant will be in their sophomore or junior year of school.
  • Only strong academic performers will be considered and must maintain an acceptable GPA, preference to 3.0 GPA or greater.
  • Unofficial transcripts or web transcripts must be submitted with application. 

Other Requirements: 

  • Good oral and written communication skills, good organizational skills, self-motivation.
  • Strong computer skills and Microsoft Office knowledge.
  • Good technical writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to collaborate as a team member, with little supervision, and communicate effectively across the organization.
  • Consistently complete quality work in a timely manner.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to:
    • Lift and carry up to 45 pounds.
    • Distinguish and identify wire colors.
    • Work with odors (solder/coating/Manufacturing).
  • Ability to meet all workplace safety requirements.
  • Fluent in English, both written and verbal.
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
