  • Responsibilities

    Every day, in nearly 100 countries around the world, millions of people depend on Daktronics scoring and display systems for information and entertainment. Our displays provide vital travel information in airports, train stations and along highways. They advertise the price of gas, store specials, and more as you make your daily commute. They also enhance spectators’ experiences at sporting events of all kinds, from Little League to the major leagues.

     

    This opening is for the Product Manager for our audio systems, with potential applications in all markets, but currently primarily in our sports business.   Scope to include product management of standard audio and components and tools for custom audio applications.  Will travel frequently to meet and understand customer application and values, meet with installers and service providers to improve product performance and value.  Looking for a strong communicator who gather and interpret field knowledge, develop a product line vision, easily communicate the vision and business opportunities to technical and non-technical, and promote and champion product line for success.

     

    *The position may be located in Brookings, SD or Sioux Falls, SD.

     

    • Understand Markets
      • Develop understanding of markets, segments and personas through direct market research, formal and informal interactions with Daktronics sales and other customer facing teams (i.e. project management, application engineering, etc.)  Develop understanding of customer problem and values to best position products for success.
      • Understand and document competitive landscape
      • Research industry trends, new technology, and new products
    • Provide Product Vision and Strategy
      • Develop and communicate product vision through collaborative events
      • Develop and communicate product strategy and roadmaps
        • This includes 3-5 year documented vision and roadmap for product families, shared with internal stakeholders.  
      • Coordinate with other product managers to provide a well-integrated system that looks and functions as intended to meet customer expectations.
    • Product Planning
      • Includes analysis of sales trends, product positioning, understand gaps or opportunities in the product line or system offering.
      • Understand and seek feedback from internal stakeholders (order processing, manufacturing, installation and service) to improve the efficiency and business success of the product line.
      • Collaborate with engineering to define requirements. Clearly communicate product development requirements specifications and schedules to the engineering team.
      • Coordinate product offering and interface with other product managers to optimize installation and system ease of use.
      • Collaborate with functional groups to develop and manage functional support plans
      • Assist with development priorities through collaboration with product and solutions management. Develop opportunities and business cases for development opportunities and represent them in investment theme discussions to promote and help prioritize.
      • Prepare and manage launch plan
    • Monitor and Guide Design and Development
      • Attend development status meetings to help guide and assist with decisions
      • Validate and verify development meets requirements
      • These activities involve working with product owners to translate customer needs into user stories and requirements. At times, this work can involve gaining feedback from key customers to ensure usability.
    • Product Launch Management
      • Coordinate development and release of sales and service collateral
      • Develop and document product lifecycle plan
      • Collaborate in development of service plans
      • Present product features and benefits to stakeholders
      • Support sales through escalations, customizations requests, trade shows by working through sales engineers
      • Contribute to product marketing including developing value statements and defining differentiators, product positioning, pricing, go to market strategies.  Assist in development of literature and representation/promotion of products at conventions and trade shows.
    • Product Lifecyle Management  
      • Product maintenance and life cycle management coordination with stakeholders.  Product introduction, obsolescence and discontinuation and communicating release plans and other essential information to customer service applications engineers and other groups requiring that information.
      • Participate in sales and operations planning to forecast as needed
      • Sales support including supplying market technical information, reviewing sales literature, providing sales tools, training and call support. Act as main communication liaison between engineering and sales personnel.
      • Monitor and analyze product performance. Create and maintain visual health reports quarterly
      • Manage product improvements including cost analysis and reduction process improvement and solicitation of feedback from sales, manufacturing, and engineering.
      • Monitor and manage product revisions
      • Review and approve engineering changes and temporary deviations
      • Manage end of life product communications
      • Facilitate pricing strategies
      • Support sales in pre-sales applications review and pricing.  Develop standard processes to support pricing requests, and where appropriate, develop standard pricing tools.
      • Support escalated service issues to quickly diagnose and resolve customer issues.  Look for trends and work to improve product performance and documentation to reduce future issues.
      • Coordinate efforts with support staff, marketing, business analysts, etc to successfully develop, promote, launch and support product throughout life cycle.
    • Drive activities to promote growing sales volume and profitability.  Target audio revenue growth of 20% per year.
    • Use good judgment in making decisions that consider both short and long range implications.
    • Work effectively as a team member work with little supervision help when and where needed make and implement suggestions for product and process improvement and communicate effectively with sales customers and team members. 
    • Become knowledgeable of company policies and procedures.
    • Perform other duties as assigned and required to meet customer expectations.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably technical degree.
    • Preferred Experiences include:
      • Daktronics products and systems
      • Experience and interest in audio applications valued
      • Customer interactions and/or market facing product manager work (product evangelism)
      • Vision setting and strategy
      • Championing the new and different concepts
    • Willing and able to participate in the gemba, including product installations.  
    • Strong oral and written communication skills required.  Can easily interact with people throughout the value stream learn about product performance.
    • Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to change.
    • Presentational organizational planning and creative problem-solving skills are essential.
    • Computer skills and Microsoft Office knowledge are essential.
    • Effectively work with a wide variety of people
    • Effectively exercise discretion and independent judgment.
    • Willing and able to travel via air and ground transportation. Must possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Motor vehicle records will be checked.  Estimated travel at 15-25% (~6-12 trips per year with up to a week duration). Travel may include sales calls trade shows and trainings which will occasionally include weekends.
    • Ability to speak and read English fluently.
